Beau was standing outside the limo with his body leaned against the door and a beaming smile on his face. It was the smile she loved. A chill flashed through her but it could’ve been the biting December air. She stepped onto the sidewalk and made her way to him. Beau wrapped his arms around her, pulling her tight against his chest for a moment. He’d only said hello when he breathed in the scent of her hair and spoke words that made her knees buckle. “I’ve missed you, kid. Thanks for coming out.”

Sabrina exhaled when he let go and opened the door for her. She didn’t know what to say to that. In the past three minutes he’d all but shattered her standing image of him and their usual rapport. He called up to the chauffer a name of a new restaurant then grinned over at her. “Have you been there yet? It’s amazing, you’ll love it.”

She pulled at the curled ends of her hair that cascaded down her shoulders. “Yeah, it was great. Wade and I went there for lunch last week,” she replied. Beau’s face contorted a little before he smiled again and put his arm around her, pulling her near. Leaning against the dark wool of his coat she felt comfortable. They were quiet the whole way to the restaurant, only the sound of their synchronized breaths filling the spacious back of the limousine.

When they arrived he did all the things she never expected him to do but always wished he would. He held the door open, he took off her coat, and he let her choose the wine and the appetizer. He was like some sort of alien embodied as Beau. When their food arrived he was quick to make conversation, asking her about work and what she was planning to do for Christmas. It was refreshing to have a normal conversation with him. He wasn’t talking down to her and he wasn’t solely trying to get under her skirt. It was also bizarre. She didn’t quite know how to handle this person. It was easy to see how sophisticated he was when she was looking at him like this. That part was familiar—feeling like adolescent alongside him.

“Declan put out a new album, have you heard it?” Beau asked, finishing his last bit of filet mignon. Declan Aaron was one of Beau’s first clients. He got signed to Mystic due to their affiliation with the musical reality show, Citizen Star. Sabrina always considered him among her generation of Beau’s clients. It had been six years since he released anything. She always loved his music.

Her brow lifted and she nodded, sipping at her wine. “Yeah, it’s fantastic! Wade and I have been listening to it on the sly in my office actually,” she laughed. “It might be poor taste for the other employees to know I’m jamming to a Mystic artist’s album.”

Beau nodded slowly and scrubbed at his strong jaw for a moment. “Sounds like you spend a lot of time with your Boy Friday.
